Testifying at Maryland State Senate in Support of Senate Bill 105 (Emancipation of the Remains of the Enslaved)

On January 30, 2024 Stephanie Gilbert testified before the Maryland State Senate at the invite of Senator Arthur Ellis in support of his proposed bill (Senate Bill 105 – Emancipation of the Remains of the Enslaved) which was inspired by her story which ran in the Washington Post on August 5, 2023.
Senator Ellis’ proposal offers opportunities for the descendants of the enslaved to have access to the burial spaces of their ancestors who died and were buried prior to emancipation.
